#FestivalFlashback - Opening Performance No.12: Patricia Apergi (2016)

#FestivalFlashback - Opening Performance No.12: Patricia Apergi (2016)

2016 brought big changes to DDF including an exciting new Artistic Director who programmed an explosive Festival Opening Performance with Patricia Apergi's Planites.

The Samuel Beckett Theatre was home to DDF's opening performance in 2016 - a high energy mix of dynamic movement and sharp humour.

Greek choreographer, Patricia Apergi's style is heavily influenced by hip-hop and street culture, as well as revolutionary and protest action. Never shying away from controversial or challenging topics, Planites was a powerful reflection of Apergi's choreographic style, engaging with the topic of migrants.

Planites was an intensely physical piece drawing on influences from Apergi's travels and experiences of flamenco in Barcelona, traditional step dance in Dublin and Arabic and African moves. The result was breathtaking - a true reflection on the power of dance to tell stories, share experiences and connect people and communities.

It set the tone for the full Festival programme that followed as well as for the quality of performances that audiences have come to expect from Benjamin Perchet during his time as DDF Artistic Director.
